SOUTH JORDAN, Utah, July 06, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Merit Medical Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:MMSI), a leading manufacturer and marketer of proprietary disposable devices used primarily in cardiology, radiology and endoscopy, today announced that it has acquired DFINE, Inc. headquartered in San Jose, California, in a merger transaction through which DFINE has become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Merit.

 

The purchase consideration was approximately $97.5 million in cash and was financed by a group of banks led by Wells Fargo and included Bank of America, HSBC and U.S. Bank.

Medical device maker Boston Scientific recently acquired IoGyn Inc, a California-based startup specializing in products for gynecology surgery. Boston Scientific already owned a 28% share of the pre-commercial stage company and, as part of the latest deal, will pay $65 million in cash for the remaining 72% stake and repay all of its outstanding debt. Although IoGyn has yet to start commercial operations, it has FDA approval for its Symphion device, an alternative to power morcellator devices to remove non-cancerous but painful fibroid tissue from the uterine wall.

The FDA gave its stringent PMA approval to Minerva Surgical's Endometrial Ablation System to treat excessive bleeding in premenopausal women that's due to benign causes, and for whom childbearing is complete.

The device uses ablation, or the destruction of tissue, in this case in the endometrial lining of the uterus, to achieve its goal. Excessive bleeding at menstruation is also referred to as menorrhagia.

The system consists of an electrode array that's deployed from the body of the device and into the uterine cavity. The ablation device is connected to a controller which has a touch screen display.
